Which ILUMA i is right for you
All three models use the same induction system and the same TEREA sticks. What changes is how the device is built and what it can do between sessions.
ILUMA i ONE: the simple one
ILUMA i ONE is a single piece with no separate charger. One full charge takes about 90 minutes and gives you up to 20 sticks in a row. There’s no screen and no pause mode, just a button and status lights.
It’s the easiest one to live with on a trip: one device, one cable, nothing to lose. It’s also the most affordable.
ILUMA i: the full-featured one
ILUMA i comes in two parts. You use a holder, and a pocket charger tops it up between sessions. In the default Performance mode, the holder handles up to 3 sticks in a row, then goes back into the charger. A full charge of the pocket charger takes about 135 minutes.
In return you get extras the ONE doesn’t have:
- Touch screen that shows heating progress and how many sessions the holder has left.
- Pause mode. Swipe down to pause a session for up to 8 minutes, handy when your taxi pulls up. It works once per stick, early in the session.
- FlexBattery. Eco mode, set in the IQOS app, limits the holder to 1 session per charge but helps its battery last longer over time.
ILUMA i PRIME: the premium one
PRIME uses the same holder as ILUMA i, so it works the same way. The difference is the pocket charger: an aluminum body with a wrap-style cover instead of a hinged door. Choose it if looks and finish matter to you.
What all three have in common
- Autostart. Insert a stick and heating starts. After about 20 seconds a vibration tells you it’s ready.
- Same session length. Up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, and a vibration near the end. FlexPuff can add up to 4 extra puffs within those 6 minutes.
- No blade, no cleaning. The heating element sits inside each stick, so there’s nothing in the device to break or scrape clean.
- Device lock, switched on and off in the IQOS app.
Compatibility: which sticks fit
Every ILUMA i model works with TEREA sticks, and TEREA from Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia all fit. Browse versions and flavors on the TEREA page.
Two things don’t mix:
- HEETS won’t work in ILUMA i. They have no metal element for induction to heat. HEETS are discontinued anyway; our HEETS page shows the closest TEREA for your old flavor.
- TEREA must never go into an old bladed IQOS (IQOS 3 DUO or earlier). The metal parts inside the stick have sharp edges, and the IQOS manual warns against it.
The ILUMA i holder also won’t charge in a pocket charger from an older ILUMA, and the other way around.
Charging your IQOS ILUMA i in Thailand
ILUMA i charges over USB-C at 5V/2A. The IQOS power adapter handles 100–240V, so Thailand’s 220V outlets are fine without a converter. Most Thai outlets are hybrid and take US-style flat pins and European two-pin plugs. If your adapter has a UK three-pin plug, bring a travel adapter.
A few habits help:
- Charge from a wall outlet rather than a laptop, which can interrupt charging.
- Don’t charge the device while it’s hot. Let it cool first.
- Charge indoors, not on a hot balcony.
Heat, humidity and the beach
IQOS rates ILUMA i for 0–40°C. Thai shade usually stays inside that range. Direct sun, a beach lounger, a parked car or the storage under a scooter seat can push it past the limit.
If the lights flash white, the device is outside its temperature range, which in Thailand means too hot. Move it to the shade or an air-conditioned room, wait, and don’t charge it while it’s hot. Keep it away from water, salt and sand. A case or a zip bag in your beach bag works well. If it gets wet, don’t dry it with a hair dryer or in the sun.
TEREA needs care too. Keep packs in your room, not in a humid beach bag. Damp sticks can give weak vapor. Don’t use sticks that got damp or overheated.
If it stops working
Try a reset first. For ILUMA i and PRIME, put the holder in the pocket charger and hold the button for 10 seconds. For ILUMA i ONE, hold the button for 7–10 seconds until the lights go off and blink twice.
